Waiheke Island
Waiheke is an island suburb of Auckland and is the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf and only 35 minutes from Auckland by ferry.
The largest resident communities are mainly on the northern and southern coasts. The island has safe swimming beaches and wonderful walks with breathtaking views of the gulf. Some of Waiheke's 25 established vineyards offer tours, lunch, wine tasting and sales. An interesting tour is at the olive grove which also rears Alpacas - always a favourite with children.
Waiheke is a Mecca for art and craft lovers so be sure pop in to one of the many shops and studios for authentic New Zealand products. You could also go diving or join an affordable sailing charter. Whatever you decide, Waiheke offers much more than just lazing on the beaches. For inspiration on what to do during a day trip to the island, read our Waiheke Island Travel Article.
